These badges are beautifully embroidered copies of the original nose-art on aircraft. The origin of nose-art dates right back to ancient times when warriors decorated their shields to distinguish themselves from others. Like a talisman in battle. The crewmen of the bombers in WW2 did not think of their aircraft as just a B17, or just a serial number or call sign to them it was all that kept them alive in an uncertain situation. It became a ‘she’, with a gender and a name. The ideas came from many different things, comics, girlfriends, events or wishes. The most remembered ones are, of course, the pin-ups! Real moral-boosters, not only to the crew who actually flew that aircraft either! The painting itself was done by anyone that the crew could find that had any artistic talent (or not!!) so there was as much variation in skill as in design.
We have started our collectors series here with some famous ones and some not so famous ones, and also some modern ones. These really ARE collectable, and we will add to the series at least annually. Do remember if you want a custom-stitched one, either to your OWN design or one that we do not show here, then we can HAND-STITCH you one as it would have been done back in the wartime days, for around £20 at the 4 to 4½” size.
